The show didn't fail because Eve played a writer. All of her characters on TV were intelligent, so playing an author was totally acceptable.

I'm not sure what her competition on the other two networks was, but The Eve Arden Show must have been cancelled due to low ratings.

It competed against "The Eddie Fisher Show/The George Gobel Show" on NBC and "The Life and Legend of Wyatt Earp" on ABC. I think the reason it was cancelled is because it's writing is fairly weak.

It got cancelled because it was beaten in the ratings by its competition.
Wyatt Earp was one of the most popular shows on ABC at the time, and it ran to 1961.

Sorry, But "The Eve Arden Show" has pretty sloppy writing. The bad time slot was just the nail on the coffin.
